The latest news from the Australian Beef Sustainability Framework

Welcome to 2021. We are all hoping for a reprieve from the events of the previous 12 months, and while some much welcome rain has landed, we are still subject to snap lockdowns and restrictions, which not only impact the beef industry, but all of Australia’s economy.

We unfortunately farewell Stephen Moore from the Sustainability Steering Group (SSG), who has served for the past two years providing corporate insights and resources around the importance of the financial and investment sector for the beef industry. Stephen leaves NAPCO for the Queensland Treasury Corporation and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

We have a plan this year to ensure we continually increase our engagement with our stakeholders and industry, and to reconnect linkages we may have lost during the pandemic. This has started already, with a few members of the SSG meeting in person in January, and we will continue this with our Consultative Committee in February. Involvement of SSG members in industry forums and webinars is increasing.

The SSG has begun preparations for the 2021 Annual Update, which we will launch this year at Beef Australia in Rockhampton. We cannot thank the Beef Australia team enough for allowing us the opportunity to present the latest sustainability findings at the keystone event for the industry.

However this won’t be our only focus. We are constantly reviewing our processes and reporting, with the finalisation of the materiality assessment in the final stages of approval with the Red Meat Advisory Council. We also continue to investigate the best ways to report on key priorities such as animal husbandry techniques and climate change. Most importantly, we are improving the way we engage with our customers, promoting the sustainable beef story to all.

Key to promoting the sustainability of the industry is understanding how producers are performing. In order to achieve this, we have released our 2021 Australian Beef Sustainability Survey. We invite all producers to complete this brief, anonymous survey to allow us to present the industry as accurately and confidently as possible. We ask for our stakeholders to assist us by sharing this survey with their networks and members.

Yours sincerely,

Tess Herbert

Chair

Sustainability Steering Group of the Australian Beef Sustainability Framework

In order to capture the continuous improvement in our industry, we are asking all producers to please take 10 minutes out of their day to complete a short survey. The data captured from this survey will assist in the finalisation of the Australian Beef Sustainability 2021 Annual Update.

TAKE THE SURVEY

The next biannual Consultative Committee will be held on Wednesday 24 February, 2021. The Sustainability Steering Group is beginning preparations to hold this meeting in Brisbane, with a virtual option for those unable to travel. As restrictions currently stand, the meeting will be going ahead as planned.
